Summer Entomology Jobs With the PA Dept. of Agriculture

Seventy three (73) summer employment positions in Pennsylvania area are being made available by the Plant Protection Division of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Plant Industry. These non-Civil Service positions in Entomology will focus on insect survey to detect invasive species like the Emerald Ash Borer. These positions are for the months of May through the end of August and employees would be expected to work a standard 8 am – 4 pm, Monday – Friday schedule.

Thirty-five (35) Forest Insect Pest Aide 1 (FIPA1), two-person crews are being hired for the following 35 counties: Adams, Armstrong, Bedford, Berks, Blair, Bradford, Cambria, Centre, Chester, Clarion, Clearfield, Crawford, Cumberland, Elk, Erie, Fayette, Forest, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lehigh, Luzerne, Lycoming, McKean, Mercer, Monroe, Montgomery, Somerset, Venango, Warren, Washington, Westmoreland, and York. General familiarity with the counties in which survey work will take place will be helpful but not required. In addition three (3), Forest Insect Pest Aide 2 (FIPA2), supervisor positions will be hired to help manage the survey crews. These positions will have regional responsibility for up to 12 counties and their respective survey crews.

Employees will work independently, and may be headquartered either at their place of residence or at a PA Dept. of Agriculture regional office. The work will involve visual survey of ash trees, placement and monitoring insect traps, digital collection of data, and investigation of private landowner referrals. A vehicle will be provided for employees to carry out the duties of this position. Applicants should be students in the biological sciences and be experienced in field work; coursework in entomology is helpful, but not essential. Applicants must be good drivers, have a valid driver's license, and must be able to navigate using maps. Specific training for this position will be provided upon beginning employment, and the employee will receive guidance in his/her work for the duration of the employment period. Pay rate for 2008 is $10.99/hour for a FIPA1 and $12.39/hour for a FIPA2.
